Cronies Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid have both been busy since their collaborative album Tongues dropped last year. Hebden's conspicuous sampling of Conrad Schnitzler on Tongues made his allegiance to synth-krautrock quite clear, and his latest release as Four Tet reaffirms that link. The title track from the Ringer "mini-album" bears a curious resemblance to Manuel Göttsching records from the 1970s - coincidence? But Ringer is equal parts Motor City and motorik... sounds like Hebden wants his slice of that sweet techno-pop crossover pie which Axel Willner has been feasting on for the past year:Four Tet - "Ringer" [alt link]
Meanwhile, Steve Reid went to Africa to record with a Senegalese jazz ensemble. Reid turned this material over to Hebden, who added electronics and mixed the record. Here's the title track from Daxaar:
